How the check works
Every statement carries the bank's own arithmetic. We add up every row we read and compare the result with the balances the bank printed, for the month and for each day.
Then every day
Wells Fargo prints a balance at the end of each day, so we check all of them too. Read check 2219 as 1,250.00 instead of 1,520.00 and the month comes out 270.00 over, and the Sep 9 balance shows which row it was.
The marks you will see
- Day ties out to the balance the bank printed
- Does not tie out, check this row
- Corrected by you
- A bracket joins the rows of one day; bands alternate by day
